Replace or Repair Fence?

Signs to Determine if It's Time to Repair or Replace a Fence

When the situation calls for a fence, there really is no other option. Whether you’re trying to keep something in or out of a property, fencing is a common, obvious solution. Most fences are designed for a specific purpose, so if it’s in danger of failing, you need to take action right away.

Fortunately, it’s not too hard to spot troubles for a fence. There are three signs you can learn about that will help you spot when a fence needs a repair or a replacement.

You Can See Damage

Most signs of fence damage are clearly visible. Physical damage from a fallen tree or heavy wind can leave your property unsecure. Also, a weekly walk of the perimeter of your fence can help identify troubled areas where posts are beginning to rust, barbed wire is broken, or overgrowth is beginning to grow on the fence.

If you can see physical damage or early signs of failure, then you know the fence will need some work.

It’s Leaning

Over the years, the ground under your fence may shift. Hot summers with little rain or wet winters with heavy rain can cause a fence to lean. If the fence looks like it is in good condition, but it isn’t standing straight, you may need to have the fence line reset, or your fence posts replaced.

Repairs Keep Coming

You can see when a fence needs repair work, but how do you know when it’s time to scrap the whole thing and put in something new? Some forms of damage are so extensive that repairs are out of the question. Major storms can lead to this.

In other cases, you know the fence is past its prime when repairs grow more frequent. If you notice that you are spending more time and/or money on the fence than you used to, then it’s probably time to get a quote for a new fence. A complete fence replacement will save you money in the long run, over costly more frequent repairs.
